A4B Today – September 2, Something in the Air

Source:Wikimedia Commons

Good Day!

And I do mean good day, as the waning Moon in Gemini forms very nice aspects to Mars, Venus, and Neptune right in the middle of the working day.  Later in the evening there’s a square between the Moon and Uranus, but in a way that’s just more support for a vibrant, mental, adaptive day.

Air signs rule the day today which means this is an excellent day to connect, communicate, and collaborate.  Both Venus and Mars are in Libra which lends a creative, relational atmosphere to the day.  Bits of data will be zipping back and forth among people and I don’t mean just through the internet.  Don’t be surprised if you pick up an idea from someone before they have even verbalized it themselves, and if this happens, make sure you share the credit.

With Neptune in Aquarius joining the crew, look outside your local environment to the world at large.  People of all stripes are on the same wavelength today and your best input can come through your social media contacts.  Or if you’re the one with the message to share, be sure to get it out through your networks to as many people as possible.  It could go viral today.

You may find that today is ideal for bridging a gap between you and another person or group.  With so much air influence and Neptune on the scene, we are more likely to recognize our similarities than our differences with others.  We’re willing to come to terms with anyone who shares our worldview today, even a competitor or adversary.  If you get the opportunity, begin with a short chat and see if you can proceed into some real communication from there.  Speaking with ease and listening with care are both in the stars today.

Best yet, this is the day, par excellence, for handing off a project or idea to someone else to run with.  The waning Moon has begun its last week of the lunar month, which is the time to start letting go and emptying your workspace and your mind.  This will free you for the next impulse at the next new Moon.  With everything about communication in your favor today, it should be easy to teach and easy for others to learn.

There’s something in the air today – enjoy it and make the most of it.  (Disclosure: with a Gemini Moon and Gemini Rising Sign plus three other planets in air signs, I must admit I’m partial to a day like today!)

Astro4Business Monthly Forecast – September 2010

Solar_system
Hello, everyone.

Here we are at the beginning of September – we made it!  The planetary aspects of this past summer (winter in southern hemisphere) were a very rare combination that played out on the world stage dramatically.  Whether our business lives were jolted by these planets at war with each other depends on whether they were in a position to impact our natal or business charts.  One thing is certain:  you know it if they were.

In case you are wondering how to get the most out of this monthly forecast, check out this link.  Some time ago a reader asked about it and you’ll see my instructions when you follow the link.

On to September.  What are the planetary influences this month and how can we work with them?

  • We’ll start with the most long-range and overarching influences, the planets Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus, which you will notice do not travel far from month to month but stay in the same sector of the sky for many years.  These form the backdrop to our personal lives, affecting matters on a global stage.
  • Then we will look at the mid-range influences, Jupiter and Saturn, which stay in the same sign for 1 – 2.5 years.  These planets represent our interactions with our societal environment, its rules, regulations, belief systems, and benefits.
  • We’ll look at the personal planets, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and the Sun which stay in their respective signs for much shorter periods and primarily influence our day-to-day lives.
  • And last we’ll look at the sign and dates for the New and Full Moon, as these mark the waxing and waning cycles in our daily lives.

Pluto in Capricorn

We’ve spoken at length about Pluto in Capricorn (see category at right), where it will remain until 2024.  In a nutshell, this long transit will bring deep change and upheaval to many of the structures we have come to rely upon:  government, religion, the economy, industry, and the military, to name a few.  This transit carries the energy of revolution and evolution and can be dramatic and at times overwhelming.  Pluto exposes what is hidden, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse.

Pluto hastens and intensifies the processes of endings and new beginnings, and in Capricorn will bring about the ending of our business pursuits that are no longer suited to our growth and personal evolution.  Whatever has been slowly leaking vitality will go ahead and die, including old business models, practices, and products.

This is formidable energy, and your best strategy is to tune in and work with it.  Find an area in your business life in need of renewal and begin the process before Pluto reaches planets in your chart and forces the issue.

Everyone with planets in the first seven degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn is already dealing with this energy.  You’ve probably noticed a deeper and deeper probing and cleansing all year long, related to the issues mentioned above.  Pluto transits can be difficult, but when the work is through, they are the most rewarding because we are irrevocably freed from a long-standing, but hidden, issue.

Neptune in Aquarius

With Neptune in Aquarius (see category at right) from 1998 to 2011, we’ve seen a growing global consensus regarding the equal value of all beings, shared responsibility for our planet, the distribution of technology to all nations, and the right of each person to contribute to and further the base of common knowledge.

The best way to work with this energy is to allow your rational mind to open to waves of inspiration from the collective whole, from your local community to the global community.  Expect to be inspired by your neighbors and friends, both near and far.

If you have planets between 25 and 28 degrees of any sign expect to experience a subtle but powerful dissatisfaction with certain areas of your life and a yearning for a more meaningful connection to others.  This disconcerting influence can dissolve the forms in our life that have no real content for us anymore.  This can be disorienting and confusing while it is happening but once deeper connections are made, the benefits are rewarding and long-lasting.

Uranus in Pisces

In July Uranus entered its annual cycle of retrograde motion.  During the entire month of July it slowly travelled back through the very first degree of Aries, and then in August it moved back into Pisces where it will remain until next March.

When Uranus entered Aries last May, we began getting to know a new face of Uranus. Aries is the spark of entrepreneurial spirit, the initiating drive toward independence and individuality.  You may have noticed new ideas incubating and a spirit of bold entrepreneurship in and around your business.  But when Uranus moved into retrograde motion, there was probably a disruption in this full-speed-ahead current.  You may now feel ambivalent or dissatisfied with your new ideas and initiatives.

And when Uranus moved back into Pisces on August 13 there was another major shift. Yes, this is familiar territory; Uranus was in Pisces for most of the last seven years, since March 2003.  But it may feel bizarre to be stepping back in time.  From our new entrepreneurial spirit we again enter the realm of collective ideas.  From our recent forays into a new style of leadership, we fall back into flattened hierarchies and committee decision-making.  From enhanced independence we’re back to collaboration and alliances.

Our whole society will seem to be taking steps backwards.  Must be something more to learn!

Saturn in Libra

In July, Saturn entered the sign of Libra where it will stay until October 2012.  Saturn is exalted in Libra which means it has a special affinity to the sign and if you’re willing to do the work, there is a promised payoff.  See the category to the right on this important transit, but in a nutshell:  what is the work of Saturn in Libra?  To develop patience, persistence, responsibility, and humility in relationships.  What is the payoff?  Cooperation and mutual support.

Last month, Saturn formed a difficult aspect to Pluto in Capricorn (see above).  The stress of this aspect destroyed structures that were no longer working in our businesses (and in our world.)  Now the Saturn energy will begin to build the Libra values of equity, parity, diplomacy, collaboration, and cooperation on the ashes of the past.  Saturn brings a serious and responsible attitude to this time, especially in the areas of partnership and business relationships.

Jupiter in Aries

Let’s review where we’ve been with Jupiter, so we can tell where we stand now.  In June, Jupiter, the planet of opportunity and expansion, entered Aries.  Aries is an initiatory sign and Jupiter thinks big.  Your former goals may have felt too limiting and you may have experienced a passion for growth, expansion, competition, and claiming new territories

Then Jupiter began retrograde motion on July 23.  You may have found your enthusiasm flagging for your new products and plans.  The forward momentum you’d been enjoying may have reversed, and you felt more restrained.  This has been an important phase for realistically assessing how much we can get done, to curtail overdoing and over-committing, and to take the time to slowly grow a project to completion.

This month Jupiter will re-enter Pisces.  The planet of opportunity and expansion, Jupiter is the ancient ruler of Pisces.  This brings a very positive influence to all endeavors that attempt to unite people based on a shared intention for the future, and in retrograde motion, efforts you attempted in the past should be reintroduced.  Jupiter retrograde in Pisces suggests we should work on re-connection. Repair the links you set up between people and your organization.  Reestablish venues for your employees to express their ideas creatively.  Rely on your intuition and feelings; show your employees, customers, and business associates your heart.  This will lead to expansion and profits.

Jupiter remains in retrograde motion until November 18.

Mars in Libra/Scorpio

Mars begins the month in Libra, which is an indication to bide your time and let matters take their course.  Mars, the planet representing action, aggression, and applied energy, is weakened when in Libra.  When Mars is in Libra we are more circumspect and concerned with the impact of our actions on other people.

But when Mars moves into Scorpio on September 14 things will heat up.  Mars is the ancient ruler of Scorpio and is very strong when it is in this sign.  As the famous astrologer Isabel Hickey said, fire (Mars) in a water sign (Scorpio) generates steam.  This is a time when we want to apply our will toward material and financial security and in the best of worlds, real progress can be made.  But Mars in Scorpio can also carry a ruthlessness and vindictiveness that we have to tame.  Develop ways to either let off that steam harmlessly or engineer it to further your goals and no one will get burned.

Venus in Libra/Scorpio

When Venus is in Libra, we find our day-to-day happiness in relationships, art, beauty, fashion, and generally getting along and supporting each other.  We are more than usually accommodating and willing to compromise.  Our social instincts are fair-minded and our business relationships intellectual and rational.  This is a good time for hashing out contracts with everyone’s best interests in mind.

But when Venus enters Scorpio on September 8, the tenor of our happiness changes too.  Your happiness when Venus is in Scorpio is found in emotional and material security.  You may worry more than usual about the balance in your cash accounts and focus your energy on stabilizing your finances.  However, you could go overboard if you are too passionate in your pursuit of security.

Be careful with this one:  permanent alliances can be formed when Venus is in this sign but irrevocable separations can be just as likely.  Long-lasting contractual or financial agreements can be gained at this time but may contain an element of intrigue and the possibility of betrayal.  Review everything carefully and if there are unspoken emotional undertones, make sure you get them out on the table before you commit.

Mercury in Virgo

Mercury is in Virgo all month and this is great for writing, documentation, and detailed project plans.  Also great for getting that bookkeeping caught up!  Mercury in Virgo loves to talk, write, and think about commerce and wants to accomplish practical outcomes by the end of each day.

Mercury is in retrograde motion at the beginning of the month and resumes direct motion on September 12.  This means that almost the entire month will be spent rehashing matters you’ve already covered as Mercury recovers the same ground for the third time:  once in direct motion, then back in retrograde motion, and now again in direct motion.  Three times to get it right!  You may chafe at the holding pattern, but soon Mercury will be moving along at its normal clip and we will be confident that all our ducks are in a row.

Sun in Virgo/Libra

When the Sun is in Virgo, your style of leadership focuses on service.  This is the time to see what others need from you, and then offer it.  This will keep your team productive and you in touch with the practical details of your business.

The entrance of the Sun into Libra marks the equinox, the point in the year when the hours of day are exactly equal to the hours of night.  This exact balance lends its flavor to the sign of Libra.  Leadership in Libra means making sure everyone is treated fairly, with respect, and that everyone’s voice is heard.  When the Sun is in Libra our focus turns to relationships, partnerships, and business negotiations.  It is a diplomatic, friendly, outgoing time but watch for those Scorpio undercurrents I mentioned above.

Phases of the Moon

The New Moon is in Virgo on September 8, waxing to full in Aries on September 23.  We’ll examine the lunar phases in the weekly and daily forecasts in September.

Monthly Recap

The summer/winter is over and we enter a month of transition, both into a new season and into picking up the pieces that have been scattered by the recent planetary events.  Pluto and Mercury resume direct motion mid-month, although there will still be a pull toward reflection and review.  When Mars and Venus enter Scorpio, take care to demonstrate your commitment and loyalty to others and scrutinize all situations to make sure everything is above board.  Once Mercury goes direct it will begin zipping through the sign of Virgo, so take advantage of the end of its stay there to finish up bookkeeping and planning.  When the Sun enters Libra we come into the autumn (spring in the southern hemisphere) season.  Time for change!

Have a great month and let me know how it all plays out!

Good Day!

As I write this, my cat is draped across my keyboard.  Every time my fingers get near his face, which is right by the ‘enter’ key, he reaches out with his paws to grab my hand.  He’s trying to settle me down; he wants to sleep.

In a way I can’t blame him.  The August heat in El Paso is drifting in the window:  too hot to be comfortable but not hot enough for air conditioning.  And the Taurus Moon does like to relax and leave productivity to another time.  But the Sun in Virgo with the Moon in Taurus means this is the disseminating phase of the lunar cycle, so there’s still work to do.

Let’s review where we’ve been this month.  The New Moon was on August 9 in Leo; both the Sun and Moon were in the creative and self-expressive sign of the lion.  This potentially led us to an audacious idea for a new advance in our business.  By August 24, we’d reached the Full Moon with the Sun in Virgo and the Moon in Pisces.  Our audacious idea had to come down to earth and become practical and implementable without losing its imagination and zest.  And by that time Mercury had gone retrograde, so we probably had to put some aspects of our project on the back burner.

The Full Moon was a week ago.  The current phase of the Moon is about getting our idea out to our customers and community, of explaining the benefits to our employees, of meeting with influential people within and outside of our company to push our product out into the market.

Early today, while the Moon is still in Taurus, it’s best to have face-to-face meetings directly with our customers and demonstrations of the value of our product and service.  Later in the day, as the Moon moves into Gemini, focus more on technological media and marketing techniques.  Be sure to include a teaching component in your marketing efforts, especially in the next couple of days while the Moon passes through Gemini.

Don’t be surprised if you run into some feedback that makes you need to tweak your product.  There may be setbacks and the need for reengineering.  This is natural at this phase and even more likely with the retrograde Mercury.  And be sure to bring a wider team into the knowledge of and ability to sell your product.  Soon you will need to hand-off the project to others completely, so start getting them ready to carry the torch now.

By the way, I had to move the cat.  Writing is part of my product and I couldn’t let him stand, really lie, in my way.  Even if the Moon is in comfort-seeking Taurus, it is time to get some work done!

Be sure to check back tomorrow for the September Monthly Forecast.

Hello, everyone.

This is another very quiet, restorative week following on the heels of our summer (or winter) of transformation.  The waning Moon provides a natural period of wrapping up projects and retrograde Mercury continues to provide down-time, time to review and reflect and reorganize.  The only major aspects for the week are a Sun/Mercury conjunction on Friday and an inspiring Venus/Neptune contact on Saturday.

Friday

Retrograde Mercury joins the Sun today which marks the midway point of the retrograde cycle.  You may notice the energy begin to shift today and if you take some quiet time you may be able to see what is on the horizon.

The best book on retrograde motion is called Retrograde Planets by Erin Sullivan.  I return again and again to this book.  It’s one of those from which you learn something new on each reading.  This is a quote from this excellent book addressing the conjunction of the Sun and Mercury:

A fertilization occurs at [this conjunction] which gestates throughout the last half of the retrograde cycle, birthing shortly after Mercury …turns direct about ten days later.  What is revealed at the conjunction is appropriate to the new beginning which emerges at the stationary direct point.

Let’s all watch this Friday to see if we can sense what will emerge in 10 days.  This is an excellent exercise to fine-tune our intuition and work with the retrograde Mercury cycle.  Here’s a hint:  since the Sun and Mercury are in Virgo, an earth sign, let’s look for a message about a practical matter such as our work, day-to-day schedules and routines, or the solution to an employee or employment matter.

Saturday

This day is lovely for anything to do with the arts, with an aspect of harmony between Venus in Libra and Neptune in Aquarius.  You should feel really “in-tune” today, connected to others, and willingly sharing time and energy with them.  Art museums, jazz, dance, multi-media, theater  – all of these will feed your mind today, especially if you attend with a favorite someone else.

If your creative team is meeting today, be sure to have someone on hand to capture all of the product and marketing ideas.  One risk of this particular aspect is that our inspiration is flowing so abundantly we may think it will continue like this always, like we’ve stumbled upon the temple of the Muse!  We may have but we’ll be invited to wander on by the end of the day, so be sure you’ve recorded every bit of revelation before you come back down to earth.

Have a wonderful week and remember to check back daily for updates on the wandering Moon and on Tuesday for the Forecast for September.

A4B Today – August 27, Throw the Hook

Source:Wikimedia Commons

Good Day!

Today all of the action is in the very early morning hours, at least in my time zone, MDT.  If you’re reading this in Europe, Asia, or Australia these influences will be more apparent in your workday; for the rest of us we’ll have to get up early to participate.

The Moon has transitioned into Aries where it meets a series of challenging events signified by the planets Pluto and Saturn and the Sun in Virgo.  Aries is a rash and independent energy at odds with both the Pluto/Saturn square (yes, it’s still in effect, even though it has begun to wane) and the practical, industrious goals of the Sun in Virgo.  The Aries Moon wants to break free:  free from the recent stresses and free from the productivity demands of the Virgo time of year.  The Aries energy wants to revel in its own spontaneous creativity and be unhampered by work routines, interpersonal relationships, even the cycles of nature.

Sounds a bit adolescent, doesn’t it?  That’s a good image for the Aries Moon during the next couple of days.  And if you do feel like rebelling, you might want to give it some thought.  What is hampering you?  Why do you feel you need to break free?  Is the source of your feeling of limitation external or are you weighing yourself down with imagined responsibility, duty, and deadlines?

I was speaking to a client today who has been well-“seasoned,” shall we say, by this summer’s fire of planetary aspects.  The Jupiter/Uranus/Saturn/Pluto T-square hit so many of his chart points there was practically nothing left unscathed.  In a leadership role in a large company, he has finally begun to realize that many of the rules and restrictions he has been following are entirely self-imposed.

His breakthrough came when his boss remarked that perhaps he wanted to “continue to be a martyr.”  This really stung but as it sunk in he realized that he carries an image of success that can only be won by grueling hard work.  His boss doesn’t work like that; neither do his peers.    But he puts in so many hours and shoulders so much responsibility that the only way he can imagine a reprieve is to quit entirely.  Now that he’s begun to grasp that he’s the one making the rules he wonders whether there’s another way to work, a way that includes some frivolous play.  This Aries Moon is for him.

The adolescent Aries Moon encourages us to play, to try a new way, to take a risk.  It can also make us, or those around us, prone to fits of temper and poor judgment.   So before the impulsive side of the Aries Moon shows up and you literally walk off the job, why not give over to a younger spirit for the next couple of days.  Make a commitment to throw off any self-imposed duties.  Throw the hook – even for a couple of hours.  And let your team take a break too.  You may be surprised at how much creativity is released with some play time.

For those close to time zones, get up early and go for a fun run.  That’s a good way to start the weekend, too.

A4B Today – August 26, Like Alice?

The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo...

Good Day!

How are you faring with the Full Moon lunar phase and Mercury Retrograde?  Are you experiencing the push/pull between these two astrological events?

The Full Moon is the time to drive our project or idea over the top, to exert ourselves to bring some matter to fulfillment.  This is part of a monthly cycle in which we initiate something new after the New Moon, focus our will to grow our idea into manifestation over the next 10 days of the waxing Moon, and then at Full Moon we take our project public, we present it to our customers, we invite feedback, we expose ourselves!

And then over the next two weeks the Moon leaves its fullness and we start the process that eventually hands the project off to others and we prepare ourselves for the next cycle of inspiration and hard work.

Simple right?  This is a cycle we repeat more than 1000 times in an average lifespan so even if we’re not consciously aware of it we’re most definitely unconsciously responding to its rhythms.

However, during this particular lunar cycle we are also experiencing Mercury retrograde, a time for pulling back, letting projects simmer, and giving ourselves time and space to let solutions bubble up from our inner storehouse of wisdom.  We experience the three-week Mercury retrograde period about 250 times in an average lifespan, so we’re not unfamiliar with this either.  In fact, one of the intentions of this blog is to make us all more familiar with both of these cycles so we can use them to advantage in our business lives.

So the Full Moon phase is telling us to produce NOW!  And Mercury retrograde is telling us to withdraw, review, and bide our time.  One way we could parse this out normally is to look at the different areas of life each is affecting as reflected in our horoscopes or that of our businesses.  Then we could say, well I’m going for it in this area, but I’m holding back and reviewing in that area.  Not this time.  Retrograde Mercury is in Virgo, the same sign as the Sun.  Therefore the areas of our business affected by the Full Moon and retrograde Mercury are the same.

This could feel a bit like an alternating current.  A burst of energy and intention may come, followed by a sense that the timing isn’t right to act.  A solution may come only to fall apart when you try to implement.  Conversely, you may decide to stay at your desk and try to make incremental progress but your employees or customers call on you to be more active.  You may feel totally stuck but with an inner urge to produce.

What is the solution?  Time.  Soon the Moon will be in a phase, waning to darkness, that will be easier to coordinate with Mercury retrograde.  And before we know it Mercury will resume direct motion.  So if you’re feeling like you’ve fallen through the looking glass, just hang in there a couple more days. The phase of the Moon will be more in sync with Mercury retrograde and at least we’ll feel like both feet are in the same boat – a welcome relief if you ask me!

A4B Today – August 25, Integration

Source:Wikimedia Commons

Good Day!

I’m always fascinated how the business blogs mirror the current planetary configurations.  Today was a great example.  With the Sun in Virgo and the Moon in Pisces, I read an article by Peter Bregman of Bregman Partners, Inc., a frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review blog.  The article was titled, “Why Not Having a Plan Can Be the Best Plan of All.”  Even the title is a perfect reflection of this Virgo/Pisces Full Moon.

The Virgo energy generally lives by the motto, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”  Pisces can tend more to “if you know what you’re looking for, you look for only what you know.”  This Full Moon can bring this dichotomy to the surface; shine a light on it so we can see where we stand.  And the Full Moon always asks us to balance two opposing viewpoints, to find the still point at which two seeming dualities merge into unity.

Do you tend more to Virgo or more to Pisces?  If Virgo, you would be more inclined to plan every step of your day, your year, and your life.  You feel productive and safe when every penny is accounted for and every task scheduled.  You probably knew what you wanted to be when you grew up, whether or not your life unfolded that way.

If you’re more of a Piscean type, you may tend to dream your way through life, following your inner urgings and watching for signs and signals for what to do next.  Perhaps you’re more like Mark Zuckerberg who had no plan when he started Facebook or Larry Page and Sergey Brin who had no idea in 1996 where Google would eventually go.  A Piscean business approach sees experimentation and meandering as a valid and often successful strategy.

The Full Moon urges us to recognize that each of these approaches works best in service to the other.  Dreaming in service to planning.  Planning in service to dreaming.  Thinking in service to intuition.  Intuition in service to thinking.  Scheduling in service to spontaneity.  Spontaneity in service to scheduling.  If you’re over-weighted in one or the other, can you see a way to bring these into a more constructive alliance?

Here are some quotes that seem to perfectly balance the Virgo/Pisces dichotomy from inspirational writer Napoleon Hill (1883-1970).  Hill was a Scorpio with a Virgo Moon heavily influenced by Neptune, the ruler of Pisces.

  • A goal is a dream with a deadline.
  • Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul, the blueprints of your ultimate achievements.
  • First comes thought; then organization of that thought into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. The beginning, as you will observe, is in your imagination.
  • Man, alone, has the power to transform his thoughts into physical reality; man, alone, can dream and make his dreams come true.
  • Reduce your plan to writing. The moment you complete this, you will have definitely given concrete form to the intangible desire.

Work on integration today!

P.S. Even David Allen, the guru of productive living, sent out his newsletter today with the title, “Let the Lists Fall Where They May!” Seems like he’s under the influence of this Virgo/Pisces Full Moon himself!

Super-Virgo or Psycho-Virgo?

Hello everyone.

Today, in honor of the Full Moon with the Sun in Virgo and the Moon in Pisces, I’m happy to share a piece by a regular reader and client, Natalie.  Natalie writes with honesty and wit about the dark side of Virgo, the side the astrology books usually don’t address.  See if you recognize yourself in Natalie’s ”Psycho-Virgo.” [I’ve added a few definitions in brackets.]

From the life of a Virgo …

The words describing Virgo in astrological texts are usually words like conservative, service, pure, cleanliness, organizational, analytical, practical, critical and logical.

All excellent and true, but so dull!

Living with the myth of Virgo is like living in the shadow of an older sister who does all the right things.

Super-Virgo never forgets anything, has an immaculate home and is organized in everything, has perfect nails and hair, and always wears the right clothes for the right occasion, always knows what people should do to make their lives better. Super-Virgo is what every Virgo secretly dreams of being.

I’m not that Virgo.

I always felt I should be. I have four planets and the MC [Midheaven, top of the chart] in Virgo, and I have a strong Mercury [ruler of Virgo.]  I was fourteen when I discovered astrology, and I found those descriptions of Virgo very depressing. There was always this emphasis on perfection and logic. Virgos were supposed to make order out of chaos. Who could live up to that?

My older Scorpio sister with a Virgo ascendant (an accountant, by the way), fit the description so much better with her colour-coordinated notebooks and homework that she never forgot and that always looked, well, perfect. Her room was tidy, her clothes neatly folded in the cupboard, and she would cook sensible food. She would even iron her shirts and jeans.

Virgo as depicted in Urania’s Mirror, a set of constellation cards published in London c. 1825. (Source:Wikimedia Commons)

My room was beyond control. I could never remember anything and would always spill toothpaste on my clean and wrinkled shirt. Still do … My favourite meal was sweetcorn and spagetti, covered in melted butter, and my dog ate my homework on a regular basis.

The image of Virgo haunted me. Why wasn’t I like that? Why would I always spill things, forget things, ignore things – avoid things? A real Virgo shouldn’t be like that. A real Virgo should be proper and prim, and wear navy-blue, sensible, yet elegant, outfits, and eat healthy food, and go around correcting things: like people, the world, grammatical errors – clean and proper. Super-Virgo, right?

For years I blamed my chaotic and self-indulgent nature on a very strong natal Jupiter, but further studies revealed huge cracks in the Super-Virgo image.

I read about another kind of Virgo, and almost fell off my chair. Finally someone who revealed the shadow side! This Virgo digs in the garden without gloves, buys mens shoes because they are more comfortable, and forgets to clean the house until grass grows through the floor. She couldn’t care less about appearances, or being of service, or taking care of people all the time.

She is the shadow. And if you’re striving to become Super-Virgo, she’s the one that shows up when you think you fail.

There is a lot written about the shadow side of signs, Scorpio is popular in that sense. But rarely does anyone mention the shadow side of Virgo. But it’s there.

Psycho-Virgo is what happens to me when the need to organize and fix things gets out of hand. That’s when I start alphabetizing everything, including my socks. When analyzing becomes obsessive. When I criticize people, despite threats of bodily harm. When self-doubt becomes so paralyzing I don’t even try. When self-indulgence rules the day. When I start to pick lint off people’s sweaters, and wipe small children’s noses. Or when I start to lecture people for no good reason.

I know everything there is about nutrition, healthy food and vitamins – I really do – but give me a choice between a green salad and a chocolate donut, and I’ll take the donut everytime. I will also, while I’m eating it, tell you why the salad is good for you. Then I’ll eat another donut.

For me Psycho-Virgo shows up with stress and worry. I’m great at details, and very often get lost in the woods. Seeing the big picture is hard. It means I have to take a leap of faith and trust that everything will work out fine. That’s almost impossible for a Virgo. The logic and practical side is so strong, faith is hard.

When I sit with my lap full of loose ends, the worrying starts. Psycho-Virgo takes over and the over-eating, the nail-biting and self-doubt shows up. It’s not nice.

When that happens, organizing my sock-drawer or cleaning out the attic usually helps. It grounds me.

I’m not a school-teacher. I’d be terrible at it. I make my living as a writer. It’s a good job for this Virgo. I can do all the research I want, I work alone so I can fail without anyone seeing me, and I get to correct grammar to my heart’s delight. My office is a mess, but I have no problem letting it be that way. Because I know that if I start cleaning and tidying up, I’ll never get any writing done – and also I’ll get bored out of my mind.

When I trust myself and don’t worry about my world falling to pieces because I forgot to pay the phonebill again, I’m fine. When I don’t worry about writing something perfect, but just do it before my courage fails me, I’m fine. When I enjoy the process instead of obsessing about the outcome, I’m fine too.

But to do that, I have to always make an effort not to let Psycho-Virgo take the lead. I have to allow myself to take a leap of faith.

And I’m fine with that now. I really am … I just have to prepare myself for it some more.

Hello everyone.

How are you?  How did you fare during our season of transformation?  If the recent stressful aspects among Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter, and Pluto intersected with sensitive points in your natal astrology or the astrology of your business, I’m sure you feel you’ve been through a baptism of fire!  And if you were one of the fortunate ones only peripherally touched by these energies, you’ve probably been called upon to shepherd other people through them, which can be exhausting too.

This week begins a period of assimilation, supported by two factors.  Mercury retrograde is excellent for taking a break from our usual mental stance and allowing our intuitive faculties to come to the fore.  And the Sun in Virgo marks a period of digestion and absorption of the activity of the past two months.  These two factors give us a break from focused action in which we can review and reflect upon what has just passed and where we want to go from here.

Not that this is necessarily easy.  The high dose of Pluto energy all summer (or winter for those in southern latitudes) may have revealed aspects of ourselves, our businesses, or those around us that may need to change.  However it’s the nature of these outer planet transits that, although we are extremely uncomfortable, we don’t see the clear route to resolution right away.  So these next few weeks will call on our patience, as we let practical solutions rise to the surface in their own time.  This kind of period calls us on our trust in process and as business owners and leaders this may not be our strong point.  Used to boldly forging ahead, it may take all of our will to let matters take their natural course.

The Full Moon on Tuesday can help us see how deep personal humility and surrender to the natural forces in our lives can actually bring our personal desires to fruition.  We started this lunar cycle with the Sun and Moon in Leo and initiated a bold, even audacious idea.  Now with the Sun in Virgo and the Full Moon in Pisces we learn how effective leadership depends on building a support team, utilizing the right tools, and staying grounded as we implement our idea with step by step precision plus a conscious intention to surrender.

Does this sound harder than the summer just passed?  Sometimes a crisis is so engaging the absorption period is a bit of a letdown, the calm after the storm.  Just rely on that retrograde Mercury to continue to feed you useful information from your deep, more hidden stores of wisdom.  Then these next couple of weeks can be more fruitful than the past few months altogether, as you assimilate and begin to apply all the lessons you’ve recently learned.

Have a restorative week.

A4B Sunday – August 22, Got Virgo?

Hello everyone.

On Sunday the Sun moves into the sign Virgo, marking the end of our summer of transformation.  Virgo is particularly concerned with assimilation of all that has transpired, and with Mercury, Virgo’s ruler, in retrograde motion we can expect a fruitful month of reflection.  In the Northern hemisphere the harvest begins, an apt image for our own process this month.

Everyone has Virgo somewhere in their chart; it’s a natural part of the cycles of time.  Below you will find a wonderful video by Debra Silverman.  Debra has recorded a series of pieces in which she practically channels the energies of the different signs.  Although presented with wit and humor, I find them to be quite accurate impressions of each sign.  If your Sun sign is Virgo I’m sure you will resonate with the video; even notice how she is dressed and her hair! But seriously, watch the video and see if you can recognize the traits and qualities of Virgo that contribute to or detract from effective leadership.

If your Sun is in a different sign, watch the video anyway.  We all have the Virgo spirit operating in some area of life.  Play a game with yourself.  Watch the video and see if you can name an area of life where you think these qualities apply.  Then check your chart to see if this is where your Virgo is hiding.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy this time of transition.
