Cisco Systems Update: Uranus in Aries

Hello everyone.

Some time ago I wrote an article in this blog about Cisco Systems.  I thought Cisco had a really interesting business model and also was an excellent example of a management structure that reflected Uranus in Pisces.  Here’s the link in case you want to revisit the article: Uranus in Pisces – Cisco Systems.  I also wrote that we would watch Cisco Systems as Uranus headed into Aries and see how they would weather that transition.

Today I read on Rosabeth Moss Kanter’s excellent Harvard Business Review blog that Cisco has restructured its operations due in part to two consecutive quarters of disappointing results.  The bureaucracy inherent in their former management structure had rendered them unable to take advantage of some opportunities, causing them to lose ground to competitors.

During the last decade, Cisco Systems instituted an operating structure truly in line with Uranus in Pisces. In order to stimulate innovation they developed an intricate system of councils and boards, some of which functioned without a formal leader.  As I mentioned in my former piece, while this strategy actually rescued their business by capturing cross-functional ideas and insights, there have also been drawbacks.  Fully a fifth of Cisco’s senior executives have left the company, unable to thrive in this kind of flat and complex management structure.

Uranus in Aries is a very different energy than Uranus in Pisces.  The committee/matrix structure that was effective with Uranus in Pisces will no longer work with Uranus in Aries.  Under this transit, business innovation will come through the efforts of the lone-wolf, the entrepreneurial-minded contributor, rather than the holistic, cross-functional team.

Trajan's Column (Roman Soldiers Building a Fortress) (Source:Wikipedia)

One of the commenters on Moss Kantor’s blog perceptively states that maybe we shouldn’t see Cisco’s reorganization in terms of failure, but rather simply change and evolution.  He lauds Cisco for recognizing the need to change and evolve and I agree.  Whenever there is such a massive planetary movement as Uranus passing from the very last sign of the zodiac, the sign of complete immersion in complexity, to the very first sign in the zodiac, the sign of simplicity and individual action, there is going to have to be a reworking of structures throughout society.  As Cisco’s chief executive, John Chambers, said, “It’s time to simplify the way we execute our strategy.”   It has nothing to do with failure; it has to do with natural processes –as natural as the earth transitioning from winter to spring.

This is simply where we are now.  As leaders and managers we should take advantage of this new energy and reform our operations.  We should give more credibility to individual contributors, agitators, spirited, independent-minded employees, people whose self-sufficiency sometimes makes it look like they’re not team players.  These are the people that ingenuity will flow through with Uranus in Aries.

No matter how collaboratively we’re inclined to run our business operations, we have to allow room for individual contributors at this time.  Some people thrive in environments of intense cooperation; others thrive in competition.  Some love to be immersed in a borderless environment while others do their best work when they’re left alone to pursue their own creative ideas.  Watch for this now.  It’s much more likely now that the rebel is the one who is truly inventive, channeling defiant Uranus in Aries and bringing real progress to our businesses.

Astro4Business Weekly Highlights – Uranus in Aries

Hello, everyone.

This week is one we’ve been anticipating for almost a year now as it hosts the transition of Uranus from the last sign of the zodiac, Pisces, to the first, Aries.  Accompanied by a Mercury transit, this milestone should be apparent as our conversations, communications, and interactions with others bring Uranus right into our business lives.  In Roman times, Mercury was seen as the Messenger of the Gods and the god of commerce.  Look for a message this week about how you can take advantage of Uranus’ ingress into Aries.

Uranus begins a new cycle

The outer planets, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are far distant from the Sun.  Their orbits range from 84 years for Uranus to 248 years for Pluto.  These planets represent the long cycles of societal evolution, the discoveries and mass movements in consciousness which form the backdrop to our lives.  When one of these planets changes signs it is marked by breakthroughs in thought and invention that catapult us into the next era.

The transition of Uranus into Aries is an even bigger event than its usual 7-year movement from sign to sign.  Since Pisces is the last sign in the natural zodiac, and Aries is the first, we are looking at a seismic shift, the beginning of a new 84-year cycle.  Uranus has not been in the first sign of the zodiac since 1928.  The whole period from 1928 to 2011 has been one long cycle of creative innovation which is now giving birth to a whole new cycle.

Uranus in Aries

Many astrologers have predicted dire consequences for the next seven years as Uranus wends its way through Aries.  It’s hard to say at the very beginning of a cycle what will eventually unfold but we can look at symbolism and history to form our assumptions.  And we’ve seen some hints ever since the planet Jupiter entered Aries in January.

Aries is the sign ruled by Mars, the Roman god of war.  This hot-headed god tended to act first and think later (if at all).  The Mars energy can be selfish, or at least self-referential, and full of desire.  Mars sees what it wants and takes it.  So it is concerning that Uranus, which brings change, rebellion, and technological advancement, is in cahoots with this god of war.

You can get a sense of Aries if you think about the force inherent in the Spring Equinox.  This powerful time contains the uprushing fever of life, the spark of fire powerful enough to force nature out of dormancy.  We’ve seen this fever across the Middle East and northern Africa lately; I’m sure we’ll continue to see it all over the world as Uranus follows Jupiter into Aries.  We’ll see it too in business inventiveness and scientific advances we can only imagine now.  Uranus itself embodies the principle of change, especially the kind of transitions that occur because of sudden breakthroughs and technological innovations.  Uranus bursts through the barriers of the outworn and traditional and ushers in the new.

For so many years people have felt powerless to address the challenges of our world, especially those caused by entrenched positions in government, big business, and the military.  But now there is a new movement afoot – Uranus in Aries brings the understanding that we are individually powerful and that each act we perform has the potential to change our world.

This is the positive face of Uranus in Aries:  the one willing to take responsibility for the whole even if that means standing alone to do so; the lone hunter who provides for the entire tribe; the individual with the courage to speak out on behalf of others; the inspired entrepreneur who through her efforts improves other people’s lives.

We won’t be working in concert with others as much as we did when Uranus was in Pisces.  But in breaking free of the crowd we can break free of groupthink, too.  What do we think when we stand outside of the cluster we have identified with?  What is the truth for us alone?  With the courage of Aries, we can act from our own truth.

Uranus in Aries for Business

In business we will probably feel compelled to take risks we would not even have considered in the past.  We may feel confined by the people around us or the structures we’ve implemented and surprise ourselves and others by heading into a brand new direction.  We may seek opportunities for travel and study, or to bring scientific or technical discoveries into our products and services.  We may approach everyday challenges as battles to be fought and won.  We want out of our shell, even if we created it.

This week, with Mercury instant-messaging between us and Uranus, we will sense the fragrance of change coming in the wind.  Don’t ignore this foreshadowing.  It will allow you to catch the energy right at the beginning of this long cycle.

Let’s all watch for signs and signal of Uranus in Aries and let me know in the comments what you detect.

Astro4Business Weekly Forecast – July 26 to August 1

(Source:Wikimedia Commons)

Hello, everyone.

This is a very active week, hosting several of the major configurations astrologers have been talking about all year.  It is also the week that Mercury and Mars change signs and then add their input into the mix of outer planet shenanigans.  If you like riding roller coasters, you’re loving this summer.  In fact, this week is so charged that I’m only going to cover one of Monday’s major aspects in this post.  Stay tuned as we fully explore each day as the week unfolds.

But what if you’re not experiencing anything out of the ordinary at all?  This is because all of the activity within these major configurations is within an extremely small range of degrees of the zodiac.  Each sign of the zodiac has thirty degrees, counted from 0 to 30.  All of the major planetary activity this summer is between 0 and 3 degrees.  Giving some latitude on either side, if you have planets or chart points such as Ascendant or Midheaven between 27 and 30 degrees of any sign, or between 0 and 6 degrees of any sign, then this summer’s transformation is especially for you.  And I have no doubt you know it!

If you’re in the rare circumstance of having absolutely no planets or points in those degrees, well then it’s your task to lend a hand.  Your colleagues and staff need you as they battle their inner and outer dragons!

Saturn/Uranus Opposition

Monday is the big day of the week, although with aspects of this magnitude the effect has been building for a week and will linger for another.  Three aspects vie for supremacy today, each strong in their own right.

Probably the most powerful is the fifth out of five Saturn/Uranus oppositions which have been playing out in the sky for a couple of years.  I’ve written several posts about this major aspect which I’ll list with links at the bottom.  In a nutshell, we are pushed and pulled between the past and the future; between the tried and true and the untested potential; between the reliable and the risky.  If circumstances force us to tether ourselves to what’s worked in the past, we’re chomping at the bit for change.  If we’ve been catapulted into something brand new, we long for the security of what we know.  We need to adapt to today’s unique environment and yet we don’t want to let go of what has worked in the past.  And we shouldn’t!

(Source:Wikimedia Commons)

As I was driving across Texas in my recent move from the East Coast to El Paso, I saw an image that perfectly represented for me this Saturn/Uranus opposition.  I was staring out the car window at huge wind turbines, the really tall ones with the three pronged arms.  There is a stretch of highway in Texas where there are hundreds of them and literally hundreds of miles of electric lines carrying the power away.  Suddenly I saw a freight train wending its way across the desert with a long line of cars and I then noticed oil wells drilling away under the turbines. A man on horseback rounding up some longhorns completed the picture.  The oil wells, the freight train, the man on horseback:  each an innovation from the past that is still extremely valuable today.   And the wind turbines:  a new technology and potential energy solution springing from a very old idea, harnessing the power of the wind.

This mix of the old and new is what we’re grappling with under this Saturn/Uranus opposition.  We’re being required to recognize the importance of each, and to use the appropriate tool at the appropriate time.  Oppositions can appear as either/or propositions but there are other ways to deal with them.  One is to find the point where you can appreciate both sides equally and mediate solutions for those who insist it has to be one or the other.  Another is to seesaw between the two, keeping each in its place for the value it brings to specific situations.  Another is to combine the two, like sending the oil drilled in those fields by way of freight train to refineries, or routing the energy from the turbines overland to preexisting electrical grids.

The best of the past in service to the potential of the future – that’s the balance to strive for under this Saturn/Uranus opposition.  How have you managed to combine the old and the new?  Please share with all of us in the comments.  Don’t be shy, this aspect has been happening for two years – I’m sure we all have an example or two.

A4B Today – June 9 Anticipation and Mountain Laurel

Source:Wikimedia Commons

Good Day!

The Moon continues its trek through Taurus, lending stability and practicality to the day.  This gives me the opportunity to explore more deeply the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction which was exact yesterday.

I’ve written here before that Uranus occasionally reveals itself as startling insights that seem to come from another dimension of our minds.  Yesterday, on the day of the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction, I woke up with two of these messages.

One was from the remnant of a fading dream, in which I walked around a corner and continued along the side of a building called “The Laurel under the Mountain Hideaway.”

This was followed a few moments later by these words:  “Ah, lovely, open, alive.  Anticipation without expectation.  Jupiter conjunct Uranus.”

I know enough to grab a pen immediately and jot down these kinds of communications.  They hold meaning, often at many different levels, and it is always fascinating to explore and try to decipher them.  Here’s my attempt as a celebration of this new day.

The Laurel under the Mountain Hideaway

I started my research with the word, Laurel.  Laurel wreaths, remember, were given in Roman times to victors returning from battle.  They are still awarded at certain schools to signify the attainment of a level of achievement.  I also read in Wikipedia that it is a huge family of flowering plants, some deadly poisonous and some yielding edible fruit like cinnamon, bay leaves, sassafras, and avocado.

Then I googled “Laurel under the Mountain”, and here’s where I struck gold.  There is a type of Laurel called Under the Mountain Laurel!  This led me to a study (“The influence of mountain laurel on regeneration in pitch pine canopy gaps of the Coweeta Basin, North Carolina, U.S.A.”) which revealed the important role Under the Mountain Laurel plays in the regeneration of seedlings in a pine forest.

At this point I started to understand the image, Laurel under the Mountain Hideaway, and its connection to Jupiter/Uranus in the very first degree of Aries.  If you’ve ever hiked among mountain laurel you know it forms a dense, almost impenetrable undergrowth.  Underneath this “hideaway” various species of saplings are taking root, deep in shadow, unseen, and shielded from wind.  This dense thicket protects the seedlings until they are ready to grow above the canopy.

This describes the moment we are experiencing now.  Unseen, possibly even unknown to us, there are new ideas taking root, quickened by Jupiter and Uranus in Aries.  But they are at the most infant stage right now.  They need protection and concealment to grow.  And there are many varieties of saplings in that Laurel hideaway; we have to wait to see which ideas will break through the dense canopy and stand on their own.

Anticipation without Expectation

I love this second message.  It has the sense of a direct admonition by Jupiter, who is always willing to give some advice.  “Lovely, open, alive”, apt keywords and good counsel for this time plus “anticipation without expectation.”  Yes, something is coming, yes, change is in the air, yes, we can feel it stirring.  But the right approach is without expectation for performance on our timeline, or for the transformation to conform to our plans.  “Anticipation” has a sense of spaciousness to me, knowing something is coming but wide open about what it will be; “expectation” has more of a sense of desire, my personal will pulling something I hope for toward me.

The two messages together seem to indicate the flavor of the time (Uranus) and how to address it (Jupiter).  A great reminder and, I believe, a message directly from the two planets for all of us.  Of course, symbolic language is open to many interpretations.  Do you see anything I missed?

Astro4Business Today – June 8, Earth and Fire

Source:Wikimedia Commons

Good Day!

Today welcomes the first of a string of Jupiter/Uranus conjunctions, this one in the Fire sign Aries.  Aries is the sign of new beginnings and these two giants teamed up in the first sign of the Zodiac in the very first degree of the sign indicates NEW in a big way.  But what’s fun about this series of contacts is that Uranus expresses its energy in our lives in completely unpredictable ways.  This coupled with Jupiter’s love of sport means the coming six months may feel like a merry-go-round spinning at top speed:  you know the ditty, round and round and round we go and where we stop, nobody knows!  Yes, that’s Jupiter/Uranus.

But looking at the other events in the sky today also brings up for me another adage:  we’re only given as much as we can handle.

Along with this immense, intense energy of Fire today, we are also blessed with lots and lots of Earth energy, the perfect remedy.  Once the Moon moves into Taurus today, it forms aspects with that Jupiter/Uranus conjunction, bringing poise, balance, and practicality to the day.  As much as we may feel like we’re spinning in a new direction, the Taurus Moon will calm us down and set us to work at our normal routines, grounding us and reminding us to stay in the moment and to deal with what’s in front of us.

The Moon goes on to form extremely beneficial aspects with Mars in Virgo and Pluto in Capricorn, lending even more stability to the day.  And Mercury in Taurus teams up with Saturn in Virgo – this is a day to make a solid plan and execute on it too.

The Earth influence steadies the Fire.  Surely change is coming but on this day, the birthday of a new Jupiter/Uranus cycle, all our pleasant work habits and daily routines come to our rescue.  Breath by breath, step by step, task by task we channel fiery enthusiasm into a truly productive, remarkable day.

Phases of the Moon, as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. The Southern hemisphere will see a mirror image of this phase. (Source:Wikipedia)

Hello, everyone.

This week hosts the conjunction of Jupiter and Uranus in Aries, kicking off the summer of transformation.  Mars and Mercury change signs and the New Moon is in Gemini on Saturday.

Monday

On Monday Mars leaves its long journey through Leo and enters Virgo, a very different sign and a very different energy!  In the best sense, Mars, the energy of activity, desire, and will takes the lessons learned in Leo and uses its now-developed sense of self-esteem and creativity to serve others, to mentor, and to share knowledge.

However, it may take some trial and error to get there.  Mars the warrior is not particularly happy in the sign of the Virgin so it may take us a few days to get our new bearings.  The Mars energy in us can serve and work with diligence, but it wants the credit for doing so.  “Non-doership,” a good term for Mars in Virgo, can seem the antithesis of leadership in business but it doesn’t have to be.  It just demands sensitivity to the next right action, noticing and reading the pointers along the way.  We’ll look more at Mars in Virgo in upcoming posts to discover the best use of this time of possibilities.

Tuesday

Over the next eight months, Jupiter will form a series of conjunctions to Uranus.  Both have recently entered Aries where they will combine with Saturn and Pluto to form the Cardinal T-square 2010, the summer of transformation.

Jupiter and Uranus are similar in that they both look forward.  They are interested in breaking the boundaries that limit us and taking risks to do so.  Their difference is that Uranus breaks through boundaries for the sake of thrusting society into the future whether we think we are ready or not; Jupiter breaks boundaries and then wants to codify the breakthrough, turn it into a religion or a School or a law.   Jupiter is very much concerned with societal ethics and institutions while Uranus would break down our structures without caring whether we are still standing at the end.  The two of these together are dynamite!

What does this mean for us in business?  We will probably feel compelled to take risks we would not even have considered in the past.  We may feel confined by our work routine or the structures we’ve implemented, and surprise ourselves and others by heading into a brand new direction.  We may seek opportunities for travel and study, or to bring scientific or technical discoveries into our products and services.  We may approach everyday challenges as battles to be fought and won.  We want out of our shell, even if we created it.

This is a time of big risks, big opportunities, massive creative juice, and the potential for just as big mistakes and failures.  Especially early in the cycle, we are likely to begin one thing and another, throwing balls into the air to see where they land.  Where will we end up next January, after the last of the conjunctions?  In a new place for sure, but with Uranus, the planet of the unexpected, we won’t know until we get there.  Are you ready for the ride?

Wednesday through Friday

Mercury is featured from Tuesday evening until Friday, which will be a great help in understanding and adjusting to the Mars ingress into Virgo and the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction.

First Mercury and Saturn combine to bring wisdom, stability, and practicality.  It well help calm our reaction to the waves of energy coming from Jupiter and Uranus and help us be methodical in meeting the challenges that may arise this week.

Then Mercury and Neptune will serve to sensitize us and to remember that there are others in our sphere with their own needs and agendas.

On Thursday Mercury enters its own sign, Gemini, which puts it into position to channel the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in the most positive way.  It will give us the facility to communicate clearly and enthusiastically our new ideas and to win customers and employees over to our new vision.  This is a great aspect to recognize whatever new technology we need to implement our new direction and to research the various alternatives.  I wouldn’t purchase anything new though; with the Jupiter/Uranus energy in Aries, you probably haven’t settled into your new direction yet.  See if you can borrow or lease for a while instead.

On Friday, Mercury, newly in Gemini squares off against Mars, newly in Virgo.  This indicates people pushing and pulling in different directions and possibly forcing decisions before they are ready.  Send everybody off to research and present their best ideas, in a coherent format, and in writing, and PowerPoint, and anything else that keeps them productive and busy until they achieve a reasoned, practical proposal.

Saturday

This could be the most productive day of the week with an excellent contact between Venus and Saturn.  Your connections with partners and colleagues feel serious, committed, and grounded.  This is the best day for business negotiations and diplomacy but with the New Moon today, please wait until Monday to formalize any agreements.

I’d say that’s enough for one week, wouldn’t you?  Enjoy your week, take extra rest when you can, and see if you can let it unfold on its own a little.  You may be pleasantly surprised if you do.

Astro4Business Breakthrough!

Hello, everyone.

How are you doing?  Was yesterday a BIG BANG?  It was for me but I’ll get into that later.

Were you awake in the night?  So many people were, myself included, with that Full Moon shining in my window and the excitement of Uranus entering Aries, sight unseen.

Today I heard a really fine interview on blogtalkradio’s “Grace, Grit and Gratitude with JaiKaur.”  JaiKaur was interviewing Diane Booth Gilliam, the creator and owner of Yogastrology.  (You can listen to the interview here.) In the course of their conversation they spoke about something that made me think, yes, Uranus in Aries.

Some context first:  many astrologers are predicting pretty dire consequences with Uranus in Aries.  Aries is the sign ruled by Mars, the Roman god of war.  This hot-headed god tended to act first and think later (if at all).  The Mars energy can be selfish, or at least self-referential, and full of desire.  Mars sees what it wants and takes it.  So it is concerning that Uranus, which brings change, rebellion, and technological advancement is in cahoots with this god of war.

But Diane and JaiKaur were speaking about Uranus in Aries in a totally different context.  In fact, they weren’t even speaking specifically about Uranus in Aries but I could hear its influence in what they were saying.

They were talking about how for so many years we have all felt powerless to address the challenges of our world, especially those caused by government, big business, and the other powers that be.  But they were saying that there is a new movement afoot – one in which we are all coming to the understanding that we are individually powerful and that each act we perform has the power to change our world.

This is the positive side of Uranus in Aries.  The one willing to take responsibility for the whole even if that means standing alone to do so.  The lone hunter who provides for the entire tribe.  The individual with the courage to speak out on behalf of others.  The inspired entrepreneur who through her efforts improves other people’s lives.

Perhaps we won’t be working in concert with others so much as we did when Uranus was in Pisces.  But in breaking free of the crowd we can break free of groupthink, too.  What do we think when we stand outside of the cluster we have identified with?  What is the truth for us alone?  With the courage of Aries, we can act from our own truth.  This is the upside of Uranus in Aries.

Ellen’s breakthrough

When I started this blog last year on June 23 I told myself I’d give it one year of focused effort and then reevaluate.  I wasn’t sure there were that many people who were interested in the intersection of astrology and business, so I objectified my efforts with a goal:  100 readers a day.  If I didn’t reach 100, I would recognize that the topic wasn’t of interest and find something else to write about.

Yesterday, with Uranus in Aries in a beautiful supportive exact trine to my natal Sun in Sagittarius, and just finishing an action-producing square to my Moon and Ascendant, I broke 100!  In fact, I had 118 visits yesterday!  So almost one month early I broke through my first goal.

Thank you, thank you, to all of you whose readership means so much to me.  I really do write to you personally every day.  I think about you and your businesses and the stars, and try to discern what would be most helpful to you.  I imagine you and I in an early morning business meeting in person, outlining the energies of the day and deciding how to take advantage of them together.  You are the heart and soul of this blog.  Thank you, again and again.

Good Day!

Happy Full Moon Day!  And welcome, Uranus, to Aries, to the point of new beginnings, new adventures, new challenges, new discoveries, a new fresh start.  Today, with Uranus, we can set down the last cycle of 84 years, say goodbye, and start anew.

The Moon begins today in the last few degrees of Scorpio.  Since most of the outer planets are in the final degrees of their respective signs, the Moon forms aspects to them, one after another, all day.  First she sextiles Saturn, then trines Jupiter, squares Neptune, trines Uranus, enters Sagittarius where she semisextiles Pluto, and then becomes Full.  Only then does Uranus cross into Aries.

I thought this was really cool.  It’s like all of the outer planets show up today for the moment of birth.  And each planet gives a blessing to the new start.  Saturn gives discipline; Jupiter gives luck; Neptune gives compassion; Uranus gives insight; and Pluto gives depth.  After the Moon has collected each of these gifts, she stands in perfect balance to the Sun in Gemini to announce the new cycle that is beginning.

Today brings you into contact with each of these planetary energies.  Some will come in temporal form and others come unseen.  Welcome all of them.  Really it’s like a party, a christening.  Join the fun.  This is the first day of the next 84 years!

What are some ways to honor the energy of Uranus?  Here are some ideas:

  • Buy a new piece of technology.
  • Join a humanitarian cause.
  • Take your telescope out and look at the Moon.
  • Read up on some of the trends that began last time Uranus was in Aries.  (See a listing in this post, Welcome Uranus in Aries.)
  • Speak to someone 84 years old.  Ask them how they’re feeling these days.  Ask them what’s new.  Ask them to mentor you.
  • Ask your younger friends and employees what they think will be the next cool invention.
  • Feed your mind.
  • Dabble in a medium you’ve never tried before.
  • Explore Uranus using the links below.

Check out this cool video.  It’s “Time Keeps on Slipping” by the Steve Miller Band.  I picked it because it has some awesome Uranus-type images, from the changing sky to electronics.  The lyrics remind me of Uranus, with its future orientation and the video even has a great Aries image at the end.  See if you can catch it!

Enjoy!

Good Day!

How has your week been so far?  Are you feeling the approaching Full Moon and the transition of Uranus into Aries on Thursday?

The Full Moon, a 29 day cycle

The Full Moon is a monthly phenomenon and the Moon’s cycles in astrology primarily represent the ups and downs of everyday life.  The Moon corresponds to the people we meet day to day and the emotional reactions and responses that form our daily experience.  The Full Moon is a peak of activity, interaction, and accomplishment.  An idea, project, or alliance born with the New Moon gains speed and traction in the two weeks that the Moon waxes to Full, enjoys a few days of fruition, and then loses energy as we approach the next New Moon.  Then the cycle begins again.

Given the constant repetitiveness of the cycle and its relatively short duration, you can sense that the Moon affects the rolling, repeating, personal aspects of life:  what time do you go to your desk each day?  What will you eat today?  Gassing up the car.  Pruning the roses.  Balancing your bank statement.  Weekly meetings with employees.  Paying the bills.  Washing the clothes.  Heading home from work each day.

Today, the day before the Full Moon, it’s like we’ve pushed a boulder almost all of the way up a hill. We’re so close, with just a bit more exertion we’ll top the hill and the boulder will begin to roll on its own.  And today, we’re lucky because there is an aspect between the Moon and Mars that will give us that extra push we need, a burst of will power that can take us over the top.  Keep going; you’re almost there.

Uranus in Aries, an 84 year cycle

The transition of Uranus into Aries on Thursday is a much more far-reaching event.  Unlike the monthly cycle of the Moon, the cycle of Uranus is 84 years!  Standing at the cusp of this event is like standing at the birth of a baby, or a scientific discovery, or a new government.  This is not a coming and going kind of event; it marks the beginning of a long, long cycle which will most likely outlast our lifetimes.

It’s very natural to feel in limbo at this time, or in “the neutral zone” as William Bridges defines the term in his book, Managing Transitions.  It is an in-between time that can be uncomfortable with its lack of clear direction for the future.  We know the old is dying but we don’t know yet what is being born.

So this week can potentially feel pretty weird.  One part of us resonates with the Full Moon and the push to accomplish; the other part of us feels the transition point between the old and the new and an underlying disorientation.  There’s a lot to do in our daily lives, but the bigger picture is fuzzy at best.

Does this sound about right?  There’s a fascinating interplay of energies all week.  Tomorrow, we’ll look at some suggestions for how to deal with “the neutral zone.”
